Felix falls to Cy Guy Greinke

Hey fans,
Felix fell short of the Cy Young award to Kansas City’s Zach Greinke. Felix had one of the best seasons in the recent future for the Mariners, and without a doubt his best, but Greinke had a better one.

Congratulations to Zach Greinke.

Mariners Lock Up Wilson with 2-year Deal

Hey fans!

Friday was the day that the Mariners signed Jack Wilson to a two year deal.

Wilson

Wilson will turn 32 on December 29th, but is still one of the best defensive shortstops in the game today, if not the best.

“When we acquired Jack Wilson we envisioned him being a key part of our ballclub over the next few year, today that has come to fruition,” Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik commented. “We look forward to Jack’s contributions and are excited that he will be a part of the ballclub as we move forward.”

Look for Wilson to play between 150-162 games in 2010.

Griffey’s Back!

Hey fans!

I am pleased to announced that Ken Griffey Jr. is going to be back for the 2010 season!

Griffey

“I’d like to thank the Mariners organization for inviting me back to play in 2010,” Griffey commented. “While 2009 was an awesome experience for me, my ultimate goal is for the Mariners to get to and win the World Series.”

Here is a great video of Griffey’s first stint in Seattle. While watching this video I realized just how much of an amazing career he has… one of the best ever.

I hope you can check out my player galleries coming soon!

Congrats Ichiro!

Hey fans!

Congrats to Ichiro Suzuki on winning his 9th consecutive Gold Glove! The Mariners have now won at least one Gold Glove in 23 straight years.

A notable player that did not receive a Gold Glove was Mariner’s center fielder Franklin Gutierrez. Gutierrez could be one of the best outfielders in the game, but not as well known.

Pitcher Felix Hernandez and Manager Don Wakamatsu are also hoping for awards. King Felix is one of the favorites for the AL Cy Young, and Wak is up for the Manager of the Year.

The Cy Young winner will be announced on November 17th, and the Manager of the Year on November 18th.

Stay tuned for results!

Sweeney: Ready for 2010

I just got off the phone with Mike Sweeney and was correct in assuming that by filing for free agency on Thursday, he definitely intends to play baseball in 2010.

“My body feels great and I have the blessing of my wife to continue playing,” Sweeney said, adding that he would like to return to the Mariners. “Last year was the most fun I’ve ever had and it would be great to come back.

“But if they decide to go in another direction, I could understand it.”

Sweeney batted .281, hit eight home runs and drove in 34 runs while splitting the designated hitter duties with Ken Griffey Jr., whom Sweeney calls “June-bug” – don’t ask me why.

“If Oct. 4 was my last game in a Mariners uniform, it will be an unforgettable day,” he said. “To watch Felix win his 19th game, (David) Aardsma get his 35th save and Junior to get a hit in his last at-bat, and to be a part of the celebration on the field after the game was special.”

Sweeney might be the classiest guy in the Major Leagues and, along with Junior, turned a divided clubhouse the previous season into a virtual romper room, where players of all nationalities developed a strong chemistry.

While the 36-year-old Sweeney proved late last season that he still has game left, batting .354 with three home runs in September.

The fact Sweeney hasn’t heard from the Mariners suggests that he doesn’t fit into their 2010 plans, but he said the team still has two weeks for exclusive negotiating rights and he still might get a call.

If not, he’s prepared to move on — but never forget the ’09 season.

Thanks Jim Street for the post!

I think the Mariners should get Sweeney back. He had a great year and hit for a good average. He could be a good DH and I’m sure he and Griffey would be fine with switching back and forth. Their bodies just aren’t able to play every day anymore.
